It felt like time to check in with our spring tree! One thing I love about these ongoing projects is their integration of a variety of skills and learning topics, all focused on a central engaging theme. So far we’ve constructed a trunk and branches, painted and attached leaves, and crafted tissue paper spring blossoms. Now it was time for nests!

We decided we’d learn more about how birds make nests before making our own. The boys LOVE going to the library (mostly for the books, partly for the toys), so we asked our librarian for books on the subject. 

We learned that many birds incorporate sticks and twigs in their nests. My boys love rocks, but sticks are a close second! The day we collected our materials, Jackson was being a bit of a pill (ok, a bit more than a bit), so Lucas played birdie himself. 

Once we had our supplies, the nests came together quickly. I cut a template out of brown craft paper, Jackson added the glue, and we attached sticks, twigs, pine needles, and leaves.

We added more glue several times. This is great for hand-eye coordination and hand strength! Elmer’s glue dries clear, so I let J really lay it on. 

After the nests dried, we found good branches on the tree. We’re already planning our bird project!
